Rehearsals take place every Thursday between 05:00 pm – 07:00 pm at the School of Music Rehearsal Hall (term time only).

About Symphonic Choir
Symphonic Choir is one of LUUMS two non-auditioned choirs. We see ourselves as a strong community built on a shared love of singing and music, with a focus on, but not limited to, sacred and secular choral works. Last year, we sang a movement from Brahms’ Requiem, and also O Love by Elaine Hagenberg. We also get the opportunity to collaborate with other LUUMS ensembles, such as last year when we sang Sogno Di Volare by Christopher Tin alongside LUUMS Symphony Orchestra as part of LUUMS 100.
This year, we want to continue adding variety to our repertoire by including more folk music and interesting choral arrangements. Symphonic choir is a place for singers of all abilities and experience, being the first choir for many of our members.
Come join us on a Thursday evening from 5-7 in the School of Music Rehearsal Hall, followed by a pub trip to Old Bar or Terrace!
Meet the Symphonic Choir Team
Conductor
Louis Stephenson
Louis is a 3rd year music student from Wiltshire who’s recently discovered a passion for education. He has been playing piano since around age 8, achieving a distinction in grade 8 classical piano, has taught himself the guitar, and has only been singing for the past year. Despite no formal training, he has enjoyed singing more than anything else in his musical journey and finds the community of LUUMS and symphonic choir as important as the music itself.
Louis decided to audition for the role of conductor because of his desire and passion to share music with others. Whilst conducting is a new skill for him, he is eager to develop this over the course of the next year and share his love for music and learning through choral directing. He is particular excited about sharing the joy of singing to those who, like him, had no prior experience or confidence when it came to singing for the first time.

Hilary Lees-Smith
Hilary is a 2nd year English and Music student and is super excited to be managing symphonic choir next year! Having been in LUUMS for all of 1st year, she has really enjoyed all it has to offer and can’t wait to continue being a part of it. She has been singing since she can remember, and been part of various musical ensembles, mainly singing in school choirs and the Leicester Cathedral choir, but also playing the flute in her school orchestra and tenor saxophone in its jazz band.
This year she is looking forward to another year in symphonic choir and is hoping to give new members the same experience she got from her 1st year by being a friendly and welcoming face and bringing more fun socials and plans to the choir!
Isobel Cunningham
Isobel Cunningham is a second-year Music and Music Technology student from Manchester. Her passions include travelling and songwriting, and she dreams of building her own recording studio one day. Isobel has been part of community choirs for over 12 years and has played piano since she was 10. A love for singing and composing has driven her passion for music her whole life – so being a part of LUUMS has been a great opportunity to join a community of like-minded music lovers.
She has taken pride in being part of such a large student-led society and loved how performing in concerts shared the hard work and passion the ensemble put into each rehearsal.
She looks forward to organising a celebration of Symphonic choirs’ 10-year anniversary, and hopes to create events and performances which will help this choir become even more exciting and successful!”
