About String Orchestra

String Orchestra (‘Strings’) is LUUMS’ auditioned strings ensemble. We are known for playing a varied, challenging repertoire and also for being the closest knit, friendliest ensemble in LUUMS. This year we are delighted to have received funding from the Frederick Delius Trust to put on a concert in Bradford Cathedral. We will even be commissioning a new piece for the occasion.

We organise a variety of socials throughout the year as well as an annual tour abroad alongside SWO and Symph.  We’d love for you to audition and join our rehearsals, concerts, nights out, picnics, ice skating trips and potentially even three peaks challenge. (Only the first two are compulsory!)

Meet the Strings team

Conductor

John Mulford

John Mulford is a second year German and Politics student. He’s a keen flautist and singer and has been involved with various orchestras and choirs, performing throughout the UK and abroad. Last year, he learnt to conduct under the guidance of Ilias Ho, string orchestra’s esteemed former conductor. During this time, he fell in love with the challenging repertoire and warm community of strings.

He can’t wait to lead this gifted, welcoming orchestra next year and is particularly excited for their first ever cathedral concert in Bradford, sponsored by The Frederick Delius Trust.

Managers

Amelia Sangster

Amelia is from Cambridge and has been involved with LUUMS since her first year at Leeds. She began playing the violin at age 4 and took up the viola at 12. She has also dabbled in both acoustic and electric guitar. Amelia is currently a member of the Opera North Youth Orchestra and has previously played with ensembles such as the Cambridgeshire County Youth Orchestra, CHMYO (an international orchestra exchange with Germany and France), National Youth Orchestra Inspire, Holiday Orchestra, and various school ensembles and choirs.

In addition to her orchestral work, Amelia performed with the Leeds University Musical Theatre Society in Songs for a New World, which has since become one of her favourite musicals. Outside of music, Amelia has played a range of sports growing up and currently represents the university on the water polo first team, competing in weekly BUCS matches. She is especially excited to work alongside John and Oksana this year, particularly in planning the Delius tribute concert at Bradford Cathedral.

Oksana Wojcik-Jardzioch

Oksana is a second year Mathematics and Music student from St Albans. She started playing the piano when she was 7, then picked up the violin a year later and has been playing ever since. She loves playing with others, and particularly enjoyed playing Popper’s requiem in the solo and chamber showcase alongside some of her fellow string orchestra members.

She has enjoyed learning the varied repertoire in String orchestra, and can’t wait for another exciting year of rehearsals, concerts and more!
