About Sinfonia

Sinfonia is the LUUMS’ non-auditioned symphony orchestra, welcoming students of all courses, abilities, and musical backgrounds. We provide a friendly and inclusive environment where musicians can enjoy orchestral playing without the pressure of auditions, while performing a wide variety of exciting repertoire, from classical to film music!

This year, we’ll perform dance-inspired works, including Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances, before moving on to music that paints vivid scenes, featuring favourites such as Grieg’s Peer Gynt. The team, consisting of our two managers, Dan and Theo, and our conductor, Harry, wish to host both drinking and non-drinking socials for our members outside of rehearsal, to make sure everyone feels included. Alongside this, we aim to run several fun events throughout this year. With all this being planned, the Sinfonia team is really excited for the upcoming year!

Meet the Sinfonia team

Conductors

Harry Adams

Harry is a third‑year MBiol Biochemistry student from Greater Manchester, and has been playing the violin since he was 10. Before joining LUUMS, he performed with The Hallé Youth Orchestra and National Youth Orchestra, experiences which strengthened his passion for orchestral music. Last year he enjoyed leading the LUUMS Symphonic Orchestra and String Orchestra as well as playing within Sinfonia. This year, he is especially excited to conduct Sinfonia, beginning with Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor and is hoping to continue a theme of vibrant, dance‑inspired repertoire in 1st Semester.

Harry is committed to making music accessible to people of all backgrounds and abilities, and he hopes to continue fostering an inclusive musical environment. Outside of music and his studies, he enjoys drawing to unwind and is a particularly avid supporter of Leigh Leopards Rugby League Club.

Managers

Theo Talberg

Theo is a trombonist and 2nd year music student.
He is from London and thoroughly enjoys playing in orchestras, concert bands and other ensembles, so he’s really excited to manage one this year!

He played in the Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Concert Band and of course Sinfonia last year, and he had a great time doing so.
He looks forward to everything that happens next year!

Daniel Phillips

Daniel is a third-year Natural Sciences student from Cardiff. He has been playing the Cello and Piano since he was very young, performing with ensembles such as the Cardiff Youth Orchestra and also in pit bands for musical theatre, including The Phantom of the Opera and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. He has even dabbled in theatre onstage, performing in the cast of West Side Story!

After joining Sinfonia last year and loving every minute of it, Dan is excited to work with the orchestra more closely this year as Sinfonia Manager. He can’t wait to work alongside Theo and Harry, keeping the orchestra running smoothly and making sure every rehearsal and concert is something members look forward to.
