About Concert Band

Concert Band is the non-auditioned wind ensemble within LUUMS, aiming to provide fun yet challenging playing and performing opportunities for woodwind, brass and percussion players of all standards. Last year, we performed a variety of pieces, ranging from Arturo Marquez’s Danzon No.2 to Howl’s Moving Castle and Hunger Games medleys!

This year, Concert Band aims to play a range of repertoire, both in terms of style and difficulty, from standard symphonic wind pieces, to film and video game music, orchestral arrangements, entertaining medleys and more, with some exciting repertoire already lined up for our winter concert! We also hold multiple socials throughout the year, to give our members more opportunities to socialise outside of rehearsals, namely our annual bowling & laser tag socials and weekly pub trip. We are also looking forward to potential new socials, such as a Mario Kart tournament in the year ahead! We rehearse weekly on Friday’s from 17.15-19.15 and we can’t wait to see you all there!

Conductors

Bethan Cole

Bethan is a flautist, harpist and saxophone player from Newport, South Wales. Starting playing flute, aged 8, they have played in a number of woodwind and concert bands, as well as a number of other ensembles, performing in a number of prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, London and Symphony Hall, Birmingham. One of Bethan’s favourite musical things to do is playing in pit bands for musicals, and they have played in a number, including the original musical “Henrietta”. Outside of music, Bethan enjoys baking, reading and going for walks.

Daisy Barrett

Daisy is a second-year Music student from Devon. She began playing the flute aged 8, and has since achieved a diploma, as well as a grade 8 distinction in saxophone. Daisy has had the privilege of performing with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Somerset County Youth Orchestra, and the South West Youth Orchestra, and was very involved in school orchestras, chamber ensembles and choirs, allowing her to perform venues such as St Mark’s Basilica,Ripon Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

She is very excited to be conducting Concert Band this year after being a member of Concert Band in her first year as well as Symphonic Choir and SWO. Outside of music, Daisy enjoys being in nature-whether walking, cycling or taking photos. In Leeds, you’re sure to find her somewhere in a park, on the moors or in a coffee shop.

Managers

Esther Miller

Esther is a second-year Music and Music Psychology student from East Yorkshire. She began playing the oboe in primary school and has since completed her grade 8 exam, as well as performed in numerous orchestras and wind ensembles. As a music student, Esther loves performing and listening to a variety of music including classical, pop, folk and musical theatre.

She has really enjoyed her time being a part of LUUMS, joining Concert Band, Sinfonia and Chorus in her first year at Leeds. Esther can’t wait to manage Concert Band in September alongside Hannah, and looks forward to creating a friendly and fun atmosphere.

Hannah Turner

Hannah is currently a second year Music student from Hull, and is thrilled to be stepping into the role of Concert Band Manager for the upcoming year. Having first picked up the flute at the age of eight, Hannah has been passionate about music ever since, with a particular love for ensemble playing. During her first year, Hannah played in both Sinfonia and Concert Band, which really helped grow her love for ensemble playing and inspired her to become more involved behind the scenes.

Throughout her time at Uni so far, Hannah has enjoyed exploring a wide range of musical styles and gaining a broader understanding of music performance and collaboration. She looks forward to applying her musical knowledge to support the band and help shape an exciting year ahead for the Concert Band!
